About Me
INTRODUCTION
I am Rowan Eckhart, and I want to be a storyteller. I have been interested in textiles and costume design since childhood, but I only began to seriously explore my interest five years ago with my dance company. During our spring show, Sleeping Beauty, my director gave me the opportunity to help with the construction of two characters’ tutus. Due to COVID, the show was canceled, but beforehand my director taught me the basics of beading and gave me a large section of lace overlay to bead for the Lilac Fairy’s tutu. This was my first hands-on introduction into textiles and costume design; I immediately fell in love.
Since then, I have continued to learn different textile related crafts, including: embroidery, felting, quilting, jewelry making, sewing, crocheting, and making my own clothes. I have learned many of these techniques in my textiles class this semester and have continued to explore them within my AP Art class. My sustained investigation this year explores the relationship between viewer and artist, and begs the question: who assigns meaning to art? With each of my pieces, all of which incorporate textile mediums and are reminiscent of abstract art, I have used my peers' interpretations to inspire and create the next piece. I purposely chose an open-ended sustained investigation to allow myself flexibility and encourage variance within my mediums. Additionally, I have an immense interest in philosophy. Many of my art pieces are inspired by metaphysics, the study of the fundamental nature of reality, and epistemology, which focuses on theories of knowledge. My art seeks to answer, or portray my perspective on, these questions. This past year has been a significant learning curve for me, and I have found my passion within textiles and costume design.
